<Setting/background history>

The book is set in Middle-Earth, one of Tolkien's creations. In the Appendix of the book, it describes that the Valar, gods or forces of Ea (Universe), created the ea at the beginning of time, and then after Morgoth, a traitor who tried to overpower them, failed, they created the Middle-Earth as their sanctuary, and dwelt there in forms of men. After Morgoth, the first dark lord fell, one of his servants, Sauron, fled and returned, desguised as an elf, fairest of all. He named himself 'The Gifted', and the elven blacksmiths were taught how to make the rings of power. But Sauron had actually corrupted them all, for he had forged the One Ring in the fires of mount Doom. He put all his malice and hatred in their, and made it powerful enough to rule the elven rings. His true purpose of the ring was when he put it on, the elven kings who wore it would become his servants and they would fight for the domination of Middle-Earth for Sauron. But the elves realized that something was wrong, and thankfully, put it away. It was thereafter that Elendil cut off his fingers and took the one ring, and Sauron passed away.

<Summary>

A few thousand years later, Sauron has returned and is searching for the one ring. Gandalf was actually one of the gods(Valar) sent to help men destroy powers of Sauron. He suspected something of Frodo's new ring and its ability to make its wearer invisible, and after a number of tiring researches, he found out that the ring was the ring of Sauron. He goes to the Shire to tell Frodo that, and Frodo is surprised when Gandalf the wizard visits him to tell him that the inheritance from his beloved uncle, Bilbo, turns out to be the ring of power, the one ring to rule them all. He sets out with his hobbit friends to Bree, where Gandalf had told them to go. But they are surprised not to find the wizard there, for he had told them that he would be waiting for them there. They meet a stranger named 'Strider' although that wasn't his true name. He tells them that he is a friend of Gandalf, and guides them to Rivendell, the city of the elves.
